Reading Rockets has an article about reading strategies that tutors can use with students in primary grades, but many of the strategies can also be used with older students, For example, the section on implicit modelling suggests how you might help a student who stumbles over a word. The goal is to help the student learn ways of overcoming difficulties in reading, rather than cue the word for them. Suggest:
- Try reading the sentence again
- Try reading the next sentence
- Think about what happened earlier in the story (e.g. “Where did the boy go at the beginning of the story?”)
- Think about what might be happening next (e.g. “Where do you think he might be going now?”)
